Champions League State Of Play

With 5 rounds of Champions League group stage played qualification is still up for grabs for some teams. 10 teams have already booked their place in the last 16, with some of the big guns still in danger of failing to make the knockout rounds. If teams are level on points their final positioning will be determined based on their head to head record in the games between the sides, including away goals.

Table Key:

Q – Qualified as first

q – Qualified

E – Qualified for the Europa League

X – Eliminated

Group A

European champions Bayern Munich are through as group winners despite their winning run coming to an end. Atleti secured a draw against the German’s, but still need a result away to Salzburg to ensure qualification as runners-up. In the reverse fixture, Atleti beat Salzburg 3-2. If Salzburg fail to beat Atleti they will still qualify for the Europa League if Lokomotiv Moscow do not beat Bayern Munich.

Group B

Gladbach suffered their first defeat of the campaign losing to Inter. This means any team in Group B can still qualify. Gladbach have been the most exciting team in the Champions League this season, with each of their games boasting at least 4 goals. In the final round of games Real Madrid host Gladbach and Shakhtar go to Inter. A point for Gladbach would see them through, while Shakhtar need to match Real Madrid’s result. For Inter to get through they must win and hope Real and Gladbach do not draw.

Group C

Manchester City have guaranteed top spot in Group C, with Porto joining them as runners-up. The Europa League spot is still up for grabs. Marseille need to better Olympiacos’s result, as Olympiacos lead Marseille on head to head due to away goals.

Group D

Liverpool have secured top spot in Group D while Midtjylland are eliminated in their debut Champions League campaign. For second place, if Atalanta avoid defeat against Ajax they will qualify. Both sides are guaranteed at least a Europa League place.

Group E

Group E is completely sorted. Chelsea are through as first place and Sevilla are second. Krasnodar and Rennes both made their Champions League debuts this season, Krasnodar have guaranteed Europa League football for themselves with a superior head to head record over Rennes. The remaining games in the group will likely see squad players get a chance.

Group F

Lazio have a superior head to head record against Dortmund, who have already qualified. This means Dortmund need to at least match Lazio’s result to go through as group winners. Lazio host Club Brugge on the final day, with the Belgians needing a win to go through as group runners-up. If Lazio avoid defeat on the final day to Brugge they will progress. Zenit are eliminated after a disappointing campaign.

Group G

Barcelona and Juventus have both qualified for the knockout rounds. Juve need to beat Barca by at least 3 goals on the final day to go top. Any other result for Barca will see them top the group. For the Europa League spot, Dynamo Kyiv are ahead of the Hungarian champions on away goals. A win, or a draw without conceding more than 2 goals will see the Ukrainians through.

Group H

With the Turkish champions eliminated in their first ever Champions League campaign, it’s a 3 horse race for qualification. Manchester United go to RB Leipzig on the final day, with a win for either side giving them qualification. A win for PSG will see them through as group winners on head to head. If both games end in a draw PSG will top the group with Man United second. If RB Leipzig beat Man United and PSG fail to win, the German side will top the group.
