Bayern Munich Claim Super Cup

Champions League holders Bayern Munich beat last seasons Europa League winners after extratime in Budapest to win the UEFA Super Cup.

The annual final was relocated from Portugal to Hungary with some fans allowed in attendance. It was Sevilla who took the lead after they were awarded a penalty when striker DeJong was pushed by Alaba. Ocampos took a long run up and slotted into the corner barely taking his eyes off Neuer in the Bayern goal.

Despite falling behind it was the Germans who had the better chances with Lewandowski causing chaos and setting up Muller for a near miss. The Polish striker then had a chance himself but shot straight at Bono. Bayern found parity moments later when Muller played a beautiful outside of the foot chip through to Lewandowski who knocked it back to Goretzka. The midfielder slotted home.

The game went into a lull before halftime with neither side creating anything of note. However early in the second half Bayern had the ball in the net twice. Lewandowski looked to have gotten his usual goal, but it was ruled out for offside. Sane nearly had his first European goal for Munich, but the flag went up.

Sevilla could have won the game late on. Suubstitutte En Nesyri was through with just the keeper to beat, but Neuer pulled off an exceptional save. As extratime began En Nesyri would have another chance, this time the woodwork saved Bayern.

Bayern wouldn’t be denied a 4th trophy this year. Alaba had his shot parried by Bono. The ball went straight to Javi Martinez who headed in.

This is the 2nd time Bayern have lifted the Super Cup, having won it in 2013.

Sevilla Are Six-Y And They Know It

Sevilla have won a 6th Europa League, which is at least twice more than any other team.

Diego Carlos gave away penalties in the Quarter Final, Semi-Final, and Final of the Europa League this season. But it was he who produced the overhead kick that ultimately proved the winning of the game. It went down as a Lukaku own goal. Lukaku had given Inter the lead before de Jong equalized. The Dutchman then put Sevilla in front, but 3 minutes latter they were pegged back by Diego Godin. Carlos had a bicycle kick deflected in by Lukaku late on. Inter couldn’t find an equalizer, despite Bono having to make a late save against Candreva.

Match Facts

  • Inter will now be 10 years without a trophy. They last lifted silverware in December 2010 when they won the Club World Cup, having won the Champions League the season previously.
  • This is the first time Sevilla have beaten an Italian side in a Europa League knockout game.
  • First time Conte hasn’t won a trophy in his first season managing a club side.
  • Lukaku is the first player to score for both sides in a UEFA Final.
  • Diego Godin is the first defender to score in both a Champions League and a Europa League Final. He lost both of these games.

Bigger things

Sevilla will now be a top seed in the 20/21 Champions League.

I wish Sevilla would become a consistent champions league team. Surely a lot of the Europa league is there to push teams to improve and a stepping stone to Champions league. It’s time Sevilla done that, their dominance in the competition in the last 10/15 years is quite disappointing on a very strange level. Feel sorry for Lukaku who will also get criticised on twitter/the media, he’s a very good player and treated harshly by many.

– Rodg

Rodg makes a valid point about Sevilla failing to turn their Europa League success into success in Europes premier competition. If the draw is kind to them perhaps they can find their way to the latter stages of the Champions League. They have proven they can beat big teams on their way to Europa League glory. With Barcelona looking shook, maybe Sevilla can begin to challenge in La Liga too.
