This weekend most Irish eyes will be on Ulster v Connacht and Munster v Leinster. However, we shouldn’t forget that Leinster Women are playing a historic friendly against Harlequins Women. And the game makes you wonder what could happen in the future.
Leinster won the expanded Irish interpro series a few moths ago, and it looked like that would be that. Now they have a massive game to go and play. Hopefully it could be start of building towards a European Cup for the Women. It’s strange that there’s no women’s variant on the Heineken Champions Cup, but this is a step in the right direction.
It would be interesting to see the winner and runner-up of the interpro series go up against the top teams in the English, French, Scottish, Italian, German, and Portuguese leagues, as well as other top teams from around the continent. It would be great if there could be a second tier tournament with the best of the rest as well. It would mean more high quality games between women’s sides.
We spoke about this on this weeks rugby podcast. It would seem the main obstacles are funding and scheduling. With the women’s game not being professional here there are issues to overcome.
We discussed this as well as the interpros on this weeks podcast. It was a bizzare game between Leinster and Ulster with 96 points being scored, and Ulster scoring 3 late tries despite having lost the game by the 50th minute.
