The Impact Of The Euros Being Delayed

During our LockDown Football Series we were joined by Sebastien of @Footballirlande to discuss how teams will be impacted by the Euros being delayed. We went through all 20 teams and the Play-Off Paths.

Teams will be impacted by players returning from injury and picking up injuries. On top of this there will be momentum swings, and younger players will gain experience. The Netherlands may have an advantage in that some of their young stars will have another season of Champions League, whereas Poland may suffer due to some of their top players getting old. Germany could have another golden generation, while it may be too late for Belgium’s.

Players like Griezmann and Hazard may be on better form, but will Lewandowski still be scoring for fun? Will De Gea or Kepa be on better form for Spain? And what about young guns like Mbape, Haaland, Felix? Will Wales or Iceland pull off another shock? Or could it be Ukraine or Finland?

Eredivisie brought to premature end for the first time

Due to the current global pandemic, the Dutch Eredivisie has come to an end. The title has not been awarded to any team, and no teams will be relegated. The Dutch government had said that events such as football matches would not take place again until 1st September.

The season ends with Ajax on top, ahead of AZ on goal difference. Feyenoord are 6 points behind, with PSV a further point behind. RKC Waalwijk and ADO Den Haag would have been relegated.

It is unclear whether UEFA will allow Eredivisie sides to play in European competition next season. Ajax would go into the Champions League play-off round. However if the Champions League winners qualify for the UCL through league performance, Ajax would be awarded a place in the Group Stage. AZ would go into the Champions League second qualifying round. Feyenoord, PSV, and Willem II could play in the Europa League. The joint top scorers were Feyenoord’s Steven Beghuis, and Heracles Almelo’s Cyriel Dessers.

This is the first time the Eredivisie has been cancelled. The Eredivisie was established in 1956. Previously, teams that had won regional leagues would meet in a play-off series. Ajax are the record winners of the league, having won it 34 times. PSV have won the second most titles, with 24. AZ were looking for their 3rd title. Ajax, Feyenoord, and PSV are the only sides to have played in every season of the Eredivisie.
