WNL Round-Up

Ahead of the international break there were 4 games on in the Women’s National League. During the week Cork went to Treaty Utd and won 2 – 5.

Peamount Utd 2 – 1 Galway

Peamount got back to winning ways by edging out Galway on Saturday. Galway went ahead early on through McKey. Aine O’Gorman is the joint top scorer in the league, she converted from the penalty spot to put Peas level. Just before the break Karen Duggan scored a belter of a goal from 30 yards out, right in the top corner.

We could watch that Karen Duggan strike over and over again.

Treaty Utd 1 – 5 Wexford Youths

Wexford continue their challenge to regain the WNL title they last won in 2018. Young sensation Ellen Molloy made it 0 – 1 from a long range freekick. The 16-year-old has been named in Vera Pauw’s Ireland squad to face Germany, and was awarded player of the month for August. Frawley and Kelly added goals either side of halftime. Jenna Slattery got one back from the penalty spot, before Edel Kennedy got her head on the end of a freekick. Kennedy turned provider when she set up Blessing Kingsley for the 5th.

Kingsley will be on the show this Friday, we previously spoke to her and others about their experience of racism in Irish football.

Cork City 2 – 0 Athlone Town

Cork got their 3rd win on the bounce to move up to 4th. Lauren Egbuloniu continued her fine form after her return from injury with a goal before halftime. Saoirse Noonan got the 2nd.

DLR Waves 0 – 0 Bohemians

Bohs got their first ever WNL point with a draw away to DLR Waves. It was a closely contested game with a super performance by Bohs keeper Courtney Maguire.

We’ll have Aaron of The WNL Show on this Fridays Women’s National League podcast.

Women’s National League Round 2 Round-Up

4 more fixtures in the Women’s National League took place over the weekend, here’s the results and a round-up of each game.

Cork 0 – 3 Peamount United

Peamount continue their march toward retaining their WNL Title with a comfortable win over Cork. Ireland international Stephanie Roche scored her 2nd of the season, her first season back in the WNL in 6 years, to open the scoring. Roche turned provider to set up Aine O’Gorman. The win was wrapped up before half time when Eleanor Ryan-Doyle scored. Peamount have scored 8 goals in two games, and are yet to concede.

Athlone 0 – 1 Wexford Youths

Wexford earned a hard fought win against battling newcomers Athlone, who were playing their first Women’s National League game. With under 20 minutes to go Vanessa Ogbonna found the head of Aisling Frawley who scored to make it two wins for two.

Bohemians 1 – 4 Galway

Aoife Thompson scored twice as Galway got their first win of the campaign. Last week Chloe Darby went down as Bohs first goalscorer in the league, well now they have their first red card, goalkeeper Courtney Maguire was shown red in the 17th minute. Thompson put Galway ahead early in the 2nd half, but 10-woman Bohs responded immediately through Bronagh Kane. Galway would pull away later in the game with goals from Shauna Fox and Ellie Rose O’Flaherty before Thompson got her 2nd.

DLR Waves 1 – 2 Shelbourne

DLR Waves and Shelbourne fought it out in an exciting game which could have gone either way. All 3 goals came in the 2nd half, Shels took the lead against the run of play when Ciara Grant chipped in a goal off a counter attack. Niamh Prior equalized with a stunning freekick from far out. It looked like the teams would share the spoils, but captain Pearl Slattery headed the winner in the 4th minute of injury time.

All the goals and reaction from DLR Waves head coach Graham Kelly are below.
