Ireland WNT learn Qualification future

The Ireland senior women’s team found out when their remaining Euro Qualifiers would take place. Vera Pauw’s team have 3 more games to play, including one at Tallaght stadium.

Ireland will travel to Germany on September 19th, before a trip to Ukraine on October 23rd. The campaign will finish with a home game against Germany.

The remaining fixtures offer a tough test for the Girls in Green, as they face pre-campaign favorites Germany twice.

The Story So Far

Ireland began the campaign under caretaker management with a 2 – 0 win against bottom seeds Montenegro, Tyler Toland and Katie McCabe getting on the scoresheet.

Then came an impressive win against Ukraine. Ireland had led 2 – 0 with McCabe opening the scoring and Rianna Jarrett getting her first international goal. Ukraine levelled things before the break before an own goal gave Ireland the win.

In Greece Ireland led thanks to former Peamount United star Amber Barrett’s strike. However it ended in a disapointing draw as Greece equalized in added time.

In the reverse fixture this past March Ireland were victorious. Diane Caldwell got the goal.

Ireland’s latest match was a 0 – 3 win in an empty arena against Montenegro. Caldwell, McCabe, and Denise O’Sullivan were on the scoresheet.

Ireland sit top of the table, one point clear of Germany having played a game more. Greece are 3rd on 4 points with 4 games left to play. Ukraine have no points but have only played 3 of their 8 games. Montenegro sit bottom with no points after 4 games. If goal difference is to factor, Ireland have the 2nd best with +7, significantly behind Germany who have +31.

1st place qualifies automatically for the Euros, which have been postponed until Euro 2022. The 3 best Runner-ups will also progress, with the remaining 6 2nd place teams going into the play-offs. Ireland are hoping to reach their first ever major tournament.

Ireland WNT Get the Job Done

Ireland picked up 6 points in their latest qualifiers against Greece and Montenegro.

The win against Greece was nervy as Ireland remained just one goal ahead despite a host of chances. Diane Caldwell eventually put Ireland ahead at the stroke of halftime, with Katie McCabe and Louise Quinn linking up from a freekick. Ireland had the better of the attacking play with the Greeks parking the bus, and struggled to break them down. Ruesha Little john had a particularly impressive performance, despite her self criticism in the post match interview claiming she couldn’t finish her dinner.

Against Montenegro, Ireland again played all the football and created good chances. Caldwell once again put Ireland ahead, however the remainder of the half proved frustrating for the girls in green. Montenegro didn’t really offer anything during the game, and two late goals from Katie McCabe and Denise O’Sullivan sealed the win. Putting teams away while on top seems to be an issue for this side, but there can be few complaints having picked up 6 points.

Ireland now sit top of Group I having played 2 games more than Ukraine and one game more than everybody else in the group. Ireland’s remaining games are against Germany at home and away, and away to Ukraine. All the group winners and top 3 runner-ups will qualify automatically for Euro2021 while the remaining runner-ups will go into the play-offs. Ireland are looking to qualify for their first ever major tournament.

Difficult tests lie ahead for Ireland. Ukraine have played their most difficult games, including Ireland away and Germany twice. The Ukrainian’s were predicted to be Ireland’s closest challengers for 2nd place. As they usually are in football Germany are favorites to top the group. Despite not being overly impressive in last years World Cup, they have breezed past everybody so far.
