WNL Round Up: Phase 2 Begins

Phase 2 of the Women’s National League began on Saturday with 8 games. Next Friday Ireland take on Ukraine in a Euro qualifier.

Section 1

Wexford Youths 2 – 5 Shelbourne

Shels took the lead through Ireland international Jess Ziu early on before Ciara Rossiter finished superbly to level things up. Ziu restored the lead just after the half hour mark before a Noelle Murray penalty on the stroke of halftime made it 1-3. In the second half Kylie Murphy pulled one back before Noelle Murray scored a 2nd penalty moments later. Ziu wrapped up the win hit her hatrick goal.

Shels Goals

Galway 0 – 2 Peamount United

Peamount remain top of the table after winning a tight game against Galway. Aine O’Gorman, the leagues top scorer this season opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Lucy McCartan made it 0-2 in the 2nd half.

Section 2

Treaty United 2 – 3 Athlone Town

It was a 5 goal thriller in Limerick with Athlone coming out the victors. Brennan put the away side 0-1 up 3 minutes in before Brady doubled the lead 40 minutes later. Davis hit straight back to give Treaty a lifeline before halftime. Keogh made it 1-3 just before the hour mark. With 15 minutes to go Keenan got Treaty’s second, but Athlone held out.

Bohemians 0 – 0 DLR Waves

Bohs and DLR Waves made history as for the first time a Women’s National League game was played in Dalymount Park. It was a tight game with Waves possibly having the better of the chances. In the end it finished all square.

Next weekend is the international break. The Women’s National League returns the following week.

DLR Waves v Athlone Town (k/o 18:30)

Elsewhere former FAI Cup winner Clare Shine made her return for Glasgow City on Sunday. We hope to see Clar playing for Ireland again in the near future.
