WNL Round-Up: Peamount Utd storm ahead

The Women’s National League returned with a full schedule of fixtures this weekend after the international break. Last weekend Cork beat DLR Waves 2 – 1 in a rearranged game. In The FAI Cup preliminary round Bohemians beat Athlone Town on penalties to reach the Quarter Final.

Shelbourne 1 – 6 Peamount United

Peamount United made a massive statement in their bid to retain their title as they replaced Shels at the top of the table. First half goals from Lucy McCartan and Eleanor Ryan Doyle had Peas in control going into the break. The flood gates opened in the 2nd half with 2 goals from Stephanie Roche and another from Ryan-Doyle. Jess Gargan got one back for Shels before Aine O’Gorman sealed what was a remarkable win for the away side in this Dublin Derby.

Wexford Youths 1 – 2 Cork City

Cork City pulled off a shock at Ferrycarrig Park to confirm there place in the top 5 when the league splits. All the goals came in the first 21 minutes with Saoirse Noonan opening the scoring before captain Kylie Murphy equalized just after. Eabha O’Mahony scored what proved to be the winner, and Cork held on for a huge victory.

Galway 1 – 0 Treaty United

Galway battled to a hard fought win over Treaty United in the race to secure a top 5 spot. Chloe Singleton scored the only goal, which you can view below.

Athlone Town 1 – 4 DLR Waves

DLR Waves got their first win of the season in the midlands over the weekend. Goals from Katie Malone, Catherine Cronin, Ally O’keefe, and an own goals saw DLR Waves past Athlone, who scored through Kaitlyn Keogh early in the first half. Next weekend is the quarter finals of the FAI Women’s Cup. All games take place on Saturday October 3rd.
