Bayern Are Kings Of Europe

There was one change in the starting lineup from the past few UCL games for Bayern. Kingsley Coman came in for Perisic. The frenchman proved to be the winner, after Kimmich found his head with an excellent ball just before the hour mark.

Bayern were deserved winners in a game that was a long way from the spectacle many were hoping for. In our predictions we said there would be goals. We were wrong, there was goal, singular. But overall nobody can deny Bayern Munich have been the best team in Europe this season, certainly since the restart. They had almost 40 more dangerous attacks on the night than PSG, and had 200 more completed passes.

The French champions weren’t without chances in their quest to complete the quadruple. Alaba gifted Mbappe a chance, with the World Cup winner playing a one-two but shooting straight at the keeper. It really should have been 1 – 0 there and then. They were kept out by Manuel Neuer who was in super form, making a particularly good save with his right leg from a Marquinhos chance after Di Maria played him in.

There was another big chance for an equalizer in the 90th minute. Choupo-Moting, the hero against Atalanta, had the ball just outside the box with options to his left and right. Instead he took too long and passed to Mbappe in an offside position. Moments later Mbappe found Neymar but the Brazilian couldn’t get his shot away. Neymar had an overall disappointing game.

PSG seemed to lose confidence as the game went on, and seemed to lack ideas after going behind. Bayern however were more composed. Lewandowski hit the post, and occupied a few defenders for Coman’s goal, which was ultimately the winner. Muller had an all around good performance, doing as much defensively as he did going forward. Thiago was masterful in midfield providing penetrative passes. If he’s played his last game for Bayern he can be very proud of how he went out.

Bayern won every game in the competition on their way to lifting the Champions League. They have also won the treble (League, Cup, European Cup) for the second time in their history. They first completed a hat-trick of trophies in 2013.

Trivia:
  • Hansi Flick became the 6th person to play for and manage the same team in a Men’s Champions League/European Cup final. The other 5 were: Vincente del Bosque (Real Madrid), Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid), Carlo Ancelotti (AC Milan), Miguel Munoz (Real Madrid), Pep Guardiola (Barcelona).
  • Kingsley Coman has now won 20 trophies since his proffesional career began. He has played for PSG, Juventus, and Bayern Munich. He wins a tophy on average every 9 matches.
  • PSG’s starting lineup cost roughly €600Million to assemble. Bayern’s cost roughly €108.
