Thiago Alcântara. Born in Italy to Brazillian parents and a Spanish international. A midfielder with a certain flair whose legacy has perhaps being hampered by poor timing and injuries. Breaking through at a time when Barcelona had one of if not the greatest club midfield of all time with Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets unshakeable and Fabregas thrown into the mix for extra measure. Now of course as we have seen in the last 8 years or so that Barcelona midfield certainly could have used a player like Thiago and perhaps building a team around him and Messi would have them in a better place than they are today and saved them money along the way!
Barcelona however chose to let Thiago leave and he ended up back with Pep Guardiola but this time at Bayern Munich. Of course he has added a big medal haul to his cabinet during his time at Bayern but perhaps failed to live up to the potential. He did however score a quite beautiful scissor kick in the last minute to take all 3 points against Stuggart in early 2014.
However where once it seemed like his career would take him to substantial individual heights and perhaps reinvent the modern midfielder it has quietened down in recent years. He just missed out on Spains dominance, and wasn’t in town for either Bayerns 2013/14 treble or Barcelonas 2014/15. He still of course could go on to lift a treble this season with Bayern having secured the double and looking like they could potentially win the Champions league when it resumes.
The question however seems to be what next? At 29 years of old theres certainly the potential for more to come, especially from a player that doesn’t rely on any particularly impressive physical trait to play at the highest level. Rumours in recent days have speculated that he has agreed personal terms with Liverpool and now it’s just up to both clubs to agree a fee, likely to be somewhere around the £35m mark. Do I believe these rumours to be true? Not particularly. Do I want him to sign for Liverpool? Absolutely. I think if Thiago had of come through the ranks of Barcelona at any other time in their history he’d be a Barcelona legend by now. I think if he was able to stay injury free for his whole career we’d be talking about him in a similar vein to a De Bruyne currently. I think if he does sign for Liverpool he strengthens them immensely providing a touch of class that is sometimes missing. For me Thiago is the lost Talent of a generation. One whose had incredible success and whose talent is undeniable but I felt in the early parts of his career he was something different, something special. However for that he still has time. Whether Thiago definitely leaves Bayern for a new challenge we will have to wait and see. Whether he comes to Liverpool or not who knows. What I do believe is that there’s more moments of beauty to come from Thiago, and that if he finds the perfect situation we will certainly be speaking more about him.
