Wexford Youths and DLR Waves Play out Paddy’s Day Classic

We’re all stuck inside for the foreseeable, and there’s no sport on. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make some sport online. We put out a connect 4 Twitter challenge to some Women’s National League teams, and Wexford Youths and DLR Waves answered the call. What followed was a thrilling chess match that we will relive in years to come.

Originally Wexford Challenged Peamount Utd to a rematch of last seasons FAI Cup final…

But it was DLR Waves who answered the call after some confusion…

Finally the game was underway, and DLR Waves squared up to Wexford Youths.

It was a tight opening

Until DLR Waves started to stretch the game…

But Wexford Youths landed the first blow

It was back and forth…

Waves stayed strong defensively…

And we started to make wild accusations…

DLR Waves slowed things down

And then powered up the wing to get away

Youths produced a goal line clearance which prompted a VAR debate…

It proved to be a very… niche debate…

It was a true masterclass…

But Wexford Youths started to pull away…

In the end Wexford sealed a tough fought victory.

We encouraged both sides to show sportsmanship…

It would appear the Wexford Youths social media department were prepared for this exact scenario…

The match will go down as a St. Patrick’s Day classic for a long time to come…

We would like to wish everybody a very happy St. Patrick’s Day. We hope everybody is staying safe and keeping well in these difficult times, and we will continue to bring you content throughout this period.

We’ll have our usual episode of our Domestic Football Podcast Get Your Bleak On up on Thursday, but right now you can listen to our Paddy’s Day specials looking back at some great Irish Rugby and Football memories.
